Pipe Dimension
What Are Pipe Dimensions?
Pipe dimensions refer to the measurements used to describe the size
of pipes. These include:
-
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) or Nominal Diameter (DN) –
The approximate inner diameter of the pipe.
-
Outside Diameter (OD) – The external measurement
of the pipe.
-
Wall Thickness – The thickness of the pipe's wall
which determines its strength and pressure resistance.
-
Schedule (SCH) – Refers to the wall thickness and
the pressure rating of the pipe. Common schedules include SCH 10,
SCH 40, and SCH 80.

Dimension Standards for Steel Pipe
Steel pipes, including both carbon steel and
stainless
steel, must adhere to various international standards to ensure
consistency in size, strength, and application. Some of the most
widely recognised standards include:
-
ASME B36.10M – This standard applies to
welded and seamless wrought steel pipes. It
covers dimensions from 1/8" to 80" nominal pipe sizes
and provides guidelines for both wall thickness and outside
diameter.
-
ASME B36.19M – This standard is specific to
stainless steel pipes. It defines the outside
diameter and wall thickness for pipes from 1/8" to 30"
nominal pipe size, with emphasis on thin-walled pipes.
-
ISO 4200 – Internationally recognized, this
standard governs seamless and welded steel tubes.
It specifies dimensions such as outside diameter and wall
thickness for steel pipes used in pressure applications.
-
API 5L – This standard by the
American Petroleum Institute is used for line
pipes in the oil and gas industry. It includes both seamless and
welded steel pipes for transporting oil, gas, and water.
-
EN 10255 – A European standard for
non-alloy steel pipes, this specification applies
to medium and heavy pipes used for conveying fluids and gases at
room temperature.
-
DIN 2448 – This German standard focuses on
seamless
steel pipes
and defines pipe dimensions, particularly for industrial
applications requiring precise tolerances.
-
JIS G3454/G3459 – This Japanese standard
specifies dimensions for
carbon steel and stainless steel pipes used in
high-pressure applications.
How to Measure Pipe Dimensions
To accurately measure a pipe’s dimensions, follow these steps:
-
Measure the outside diameter (OD) – Use a
calliper to determine the outside dimension.
-
Check the wall thickness – You can measure the
thickness using a micrometre.
-
Determine the nominal size (NPS) – Based on the
OD, you can identify the nominal pipe size from a reference chart.
-
Look for the schedule (SCH) – The schedule gives
you an idea of the wall thickness and the pressure the pipe can
handle.
Importance of Accurate Pipe Dimensions
Getting the right pipe dimensions is essential for:
-
Ensuring proper flow rates – Larger pipes can
handle more volume, while smaller pipes can lead to bottlenecks.
-
Safety – Pipes with incorrect dimensions might
not handle the pressure and could result in leaks or failure.
-
Compliance – Many industries require pipes to
meet certain dimensional standards for quality assurance.
Applications Based on Pipe Dimensions
-
Residential Plumbing – Pipes of smaller diameters
(e.g., 1/2", 1") are commonly used.
-
Industrial Use – Larger pipes (e.g., 4",
6") are necessary for manufacturing and processing plants.
-
Oil & Gas – High-pressure pipes with specific
schedules are essential in these applications.
